Will We Even See the Next Mass Effect?
EA’s New Ownership: What’s Going On?
So, EA just went through this massive buyout deal that’s, like, the biggest thing since sliced bread for private equity or whatever. Now it’s owned by a bunch of big-time investors, including the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. What does that mean for us gamers? Well, no one really knows just yet! Employees are prepping for the worst, and the company is sitting on a mountain of debt, about $20 billion. Yikes! Will this change the game or just make them stick to their usual playbook?
Dusting Off the Old Classics
Emmanuel Rosier, a market intel guru and a former EA employee, says we might see some shifts. Sports games are likely to remain their bread and butter—especially football and soccer, given the interests of their new owners. But what about those forgotten titles in EA’s treasure chest? You know, the ones gathering dust but waiting for a glorious renaissance? Rosier throws out names like Ultima and Wing Commander. Can you imagine? Reviving those would be like bringing back your favorite retro toys!
Now, while some of us cling to the hope of an Ultima 4 remake or a shiny new version of Wing Commander Privateer, Rosier warns that many of these IPs are overlooked. “They might just sell ’em off or hand them to an external studio,” he mentions. Mobile games, anyone?
Then there’s the BioWare situation. They’ve had a rough few years, but there’s still some hope. Mass Effect and Dragon Age have potential to swing back big time. Rosier’s cautiously optimistic, but let’s face it—would EA really cut the funding before BioWare gets a fair shot? That would be so mean!
At the end of the day, if you’re anything like me, you’re waiting with bated breath to see if that next Mass Effect game actually becomes a reality. Until EA starts showing some love, I’m sitting tight and saying, “I’ll believe it when I see it!” Fingers crossed, though!
