The Sad Saga of Thick as Thieves: No More Updates in Sight
When Stealth Goes Awry
So, it’s official folks! OtherSide Entertainment has hung up their stealth gear and put Thick As Thieves on the shelf. Released back in May, this game was supposed to be a thrilling ride, yet it felt more like a rollercoaster that never really left the station.
Imagine this: you’re all set for a wild adventure, two maps in hand, a bunch of maddening mechanics like a time-limit system that even a watchmaker would raise an eyebrow at, and, oh wait—no rebindable keys? Yup, that was the charm of Thick As Thieves at launch. It’s as if they threw it out the door and hoped for the best, thinking anyone would want to pay for such a half-cooked escapade!
Time to Bid Farewell
Now, after some promising post-launch updates, including the oh-so-glamorous rebindable keys, the situation hasn’t exactly improved for our sneaky little thief. With layoffs hitting OtherSide like a ton of bricks, there are less than ten brave souls left fighting for the game’s honor.
Jeff Hickman, the game director, broke the news with a heartwarming blend of sadness and resignation. He noted that only a tiny team remains and that they won’t be delivering any more content updates. Cue the wah-wah sound effect. In his own words, he said, “To be frank, this is not the outcome that any of us want…”, which is really just a polite way of saying, ‘Yup, this flopped.’
But fear not! Thick as Thieves isn’t completely falling into the abyss. In a last-ditch effort to keep our clandestine dreams alive, OtherSide and their companion on this journey, Megabit, are prepping a new version of the game that’ll use good old Peer-to-Peer services. Think cozy game nights with friends, sans the need to pay for servers that belong in a museum!
However, one has to wonder if launching Thick as Thieves at that bargain bin price of $5 did it absolutely no favors. It felt more like a red flag of desperation than a badge of honor. Sure, maybe it would have still found a small audience, but would a higher price have painted a more appealing picture of quality?
In the end, dear gamers, all we can do is tip our hats to what was, indeed, an ambitious yet misguided venture. As the last whispers of Thick as Thieves fade into gaming history, let’s raise a glass (or a controller) to all those stealthy endeavors that keep our gaming lives interesting, even if they don’t always pan out.
