What to Expect from Path of Exile 2: New Classes, Merging Skills, and Epic Game Mechanics
New Classes on the Horizon
Path of Exile 2 is gearing up for an epic launch in December, and let me tell you, the excitement is palpable! Although the game is about to emerge from its early access cocoon, it’s still taking shape. We’re expecting the last two acts of the campaign and the introduction of new classes—the Duelist and the Shadow, though we’re still short of our promised dozen player archetypes.
At Exilecon 2026, I had the pleasure of chatting with Game Directors Jonathan Rogers and Mark Roberts about their plans. The big ticket items this time around? The highly anticipated Templar and Marauder classes, and oh boy, the twists in gameplay they come with!
Class Evolution and Merging Skills
Now, if you’ve dabbled in the previous Path of Exile games, you’re probably familiar with our old friends, the Templar and Marauder. But this time around, the devs wanted to pull out all the stops! Rogers hinted that while crafting a unique blend of melee and magic skills is on their wishlist for the Templar, they’ve noticed players often shy away from mixing things up—most either go full melee or pure cast.
“Look, for Templar, I would consider it a flop if we don’t nail that integration of spells and sword swings!” Rogers exclaimed, and honestly, he seems pretty determined to make it happen. Plus, he dropped a little nugget about how the adjustments for Templar might benefit the Druid class as well. How’s that for collaboration?
As for our tough guy, the Marauder, the game devs have plans to introduce some wicked axes! Yeah, you heard me right—a whole new level of smashing! But what will make these axes truly special? That’s the million-dollar question, folks. The devs have a few ideas lined up but haven’t had the chance to test them thoroughly yet.
And just to keep things exciting, Rogers hinted that we might see these new classes come to fruition as early as next year, although there were some delays. You know how these things go—big dreams take time!
Speaking of dreams, they’re also refining Acts Five and Six of the campaign. Don’t sweat it; they promise it won’t take ages to complete these new acts. According to Rogers, Act Six is leaner and meaner, focusing on a speedy sprint to the finish, while Act Five is more expansive. But hey, no one likes a bloated act, right?
All this preparation leads to one certainty: the developers can’t wait to get back to the classic four-month seasonal cycle of updates. “I’m just itching to have that rhythm back,” Roberts chuckled, and honestly, so are we!
As for the exciting new league mechanic, Conquerors of Wraeclast, it’s got a strategy layer that cranks things up a notch! Players will join factions, build strongholds, and lead their NPC troops to snag over a hundred endgame castles. Talk about medieval warfare meets RPG excitement! The nostalgia nod to Heroes of Might and Magic is strong, even if some people on the team have never even played it (how is that even possible?!).
When battles kick off, expect to feel epic! Rogers likened the gameplay to being a “god amongst mere mortals.” Meanwhile, to keep faction-picking balanced, they’re tweaking things to avoid everyone piling onto one side. Because, let’s be honest, who likes being in the losing team, right?
With so much ambition and innovation in the air, the launch of 1.0 is set to be a game-changer in the Path of Exile universe. Just remember: every league needs unique thrills while keeping players guessing! And while the newest mechanics are stirring excitement, Rogers assured that they’ll ensure what players love sticks around.
So gear up, folks! Path of Exile 2 hits version 1.0 on Friday, December 11, and guess what? It’s free to play! Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for all the juicy details upon launch—you won’t want to miss this epic ride!
