The Era of Movie Games is Evolving

Hey there, fellow adventurers! So, have you noticed how the world of movie games feels like it’s taking a long snooze? Nowadays, it seems like Hollywood has decided to flip the script and focus on turning video games into movies instead. With titles like Expedition 33 and Arc Raiders ready to hit the big screen, it’s like they finally woke up to the fact that gaming isn’t just child’s play—it’s a freaking goldmine! Meanwhile, the spin-off games from movies seem to be struggling like they’re stuck in quicksand. Remember how Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora turned out? Yeah, me too, and let’s just say my excitement had a flat tire. That’s why I hesitated to dive into Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Sure, I love Indy like a kid loves candy, but after those recent flicks, I figured, how good could the game be?

Finding My Adventure

But let me tell you, this game grabbed a hold of my brain like a powerful ancient artifact! It quickly turned into my personal obsession, sort of like that dusty Roman Empire era we all wish we could forget but can’t. I found myself contemplating it at least once every few days—was that longing for an Uncharted adventure tugging at my heartstrings, or was I just having a midlife crisis approaching the big 3-0? Either way, I knew I was destined to give Bethesda’s action-packed adventure a go.

Fast forward almost a year, and I finally jumped in. My last two weekends turned into an exhilarating whirlwind of whip-cracking, Nazi-bashing, and watching ancient temples meet their doom. While my inner history nerd cried over all those broken artifacts (sorry, history!), Indiana Jones and the Great Circle turned out to be a flawless spin-off that hit all the right notes.

Even though this game tells a brand-new story, it captures the classic Indy humor and cheekiness beautifully. From those exaggerated punch sound effects that make you giggle to map sequences that will remind you of the movies—we’re talking nostalgia overload! You’ll feel like a true superhero, using your trusty whip to climb Vatican walls or facing giants that pop up out of nowhere like they forgot to pay their rent. Seriously, it’s a non-stop thrill ride, and nothing says “I’m living on the edge” like dodging death and looking fabulous while doing it!

Now let’s chat puzzles. Sure, there are moments of stealthy sneaking around (which is delightful), but most of your time is spent scratching your head over ancient tablets and figuring out how to bust open hidden paths. Whether you’re playing the pipe game in Thailand or solving the Fountain of Confession riddle, it’s a real brain workout! I can’t tell you how many head-scratching hours I spent at the Three-Eyed Door in Gizeh.

This is the true essence of an Indiana Jones experience—bold traps, brainy challenges, and a narrative that nails it.

And oh boy, the visuals! Trotting from the Vatican’s stunning architecture to the sandy vistas of Egypt and then into wartime Shanghai was eye candy for days. Each location is so vividly brought to life that you can almost hear the characters whispering their secrets. It’s like every character belongs in this grand whodunnit mystery, and they feel just as important!

But let’s not forget the character portrayals. Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones is iconic, but let’s give a round of applause to Troy Baker! This guy captures Indiana’s spirit so well he had me convinced he could be mistaken for Ford himself (seriously!). Baker’s snappy comebacks and subtle antics had me laughing out loud. Sure, he may not have snagged any awards, but let’s just say he stood out as a worthy Indy!

Despite the game’s stealth elements not being groundbreaking by any stretch (let’s be honest, smacking Nazis with whatever is around never gets old), Indiana Jones and the Great Circle ranks high on the spin-off ladder. Sure, there are exceptional contenders out there, but I wholeheartedly believe this one deserves a Game of the Year nod. It was released at a tricky time—not making it to the 2024 Game Awards due to a cut-off, and getting overshadowed in 2026 by big names like Silksong and Hades 2. It almost feels like this gem was lost in the gaming time stream, not because it’s a flop (that 86 on Metacritic says otherwise!), but simply because of poor timing.

As a massive Indy fan (I even dreamed of becoming an archaeologist, fun fact!), The Great Circle delivered everything I hoped for and more. It’s my new favorite fixation; I think about it daily. With the Rome DLC, Order of Giants, underway, I can’t help but grin. Maybe there’s still hope for great movie spin-offs after all; fingers crossed!
