Deus Ex: Invisible War’s Audio Director Reflects on the Soundtrack
Remembering the Sound of Invisible War
Ah, Deus Ex: Invisible War, the game that falls somewhere between a masterpiece and a meme! Our boy, Alexander Brandon, took the wheel as audio director for this sequel, and he’s got some thoughts. You see, it’s not all rainbows and sound waves; Brandon admits, “There’s room for improvement, but I’m mostly proud of what we accomplished!”
After rocking the audio for the original Deus Ex, stepping into that audio director position must have been a thrill. Brandon reminisces about how his ex-wife lent her magical pipes to the main theme. That’s right, folks—love and music make everything better! He believes they did a bang-up job on the theme and while it may not have been the loud, flashy ’90s cyberpunk anthem everybody was expecting, it’s definitely not bland vanilla either!
Crafting a Complex World
Invisible War wasn’t just about making a fun shooting gallery. Oh no, it stepped into the world of factions! Players were given the choice to either join them, betray them, or pit them against each other like it’s a bizarre reality show. Brandon wanted to create a darker, more immersive narrative in a world that was, visually speaking, a bit lighter. Talk about a complicated cocktail of story!
“We aimed for a more complicated story even if the systems were simpler,” he said. They managed to produce a soundtrack that adapts to your location, so Cairo feels completely different from Trier. Sure the levels had their hiccups, but the ear candy was on point, especially thanks to Kidneythieves, whose frontman played NG Resonance. Sweet music to our ears!
Brandon concluded with a grin, “There’s a lot I’d change if I could turn back time, but overall, I’m proud of it!” And honestly, who among us wouldn’t wish for a do-over? But hey, if you’re looking for a blast from the past—or a reason to jump back in—this game has a soundtrack that still gets the heart racing, dark theme and all!
