The Nightmare Fuel of JRPGs

JRPG monsters are not for the faint of heart! While some are adorably cute—and you could almost hug them—most are like a twisted concoction of every animal and horror story you thought you knew. Seriously, if you ever wondered what happens when you take a blender to nature documentaries and classic mythology, just look at these creatures.

Not that I’m complaining! It wouldn’t be a proper JRPG without some spine-chilling foes to keep your heart racing. I mean, I had a blast with Metaphor: ReFantazio over the holidays, which is like staring into one big old creepy painting by Hieronymus Bosch—only with more tentacles. Those bosses? Let’s just say they redefine what we consider monsters!

Surprises in Trails in the Sky

Now, I never really expected to encounter something that would send shivers down my spine in a Trails game. Usually, these adventures are more about the charm of everyday life. Take Trails in the Sky, for example. It’s one big beautiful exploration of the life of two favorite characters, Estelle and Joshua, as they leisurely wander around Liberl, completing quirky tasks and proving that being a Bracer is just normal everyday shenanigans.

But then I plugged into the Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter Remake and boy, was I in for a surprise! I strolled through Kaldia Tunnel, minding my own business, when I encountered the Faerie Epitaph. Originally, it looked like a tragic melting angel statue, but with this fabulous 3D upgrade, it turned into something so much weirder!

Here’s the kicker: the Faerie Epitaph is a sneaky little devil! It doesn’t move unless you aren’t looking at it. Yup, you heard me right! Talk about nightmares! As I whacked the first Epitaph I saw, I had no idea that there was another one creeping up behind me! The moment I turned around after admiring a treasure chest? Boom! Face to face with a scary angel! I guess I’m still recovering from that first wild episode of *Doctor Who*. Seriously, who thought monsters that only move when you aren’t watching could be so creepy?!

This delightful twist makes for a wonderfully chilling addition to the full remake, and it’s clear that Falcom has put a ton of effort into breathing new, modern life into these classics. As a die-hard fan of the Trails of Cold Steel series, I was already on board with the remake of the first chapter, and now with the second chapter, I’m having a blast—when I’m not in sheer terror from these lurking creatures, that is!
